Students take five courses per semester, all of which are compulsory courses in the first two years of the program. These courses provide the basic apparatus of skills and knowledge for the more specialized elective courses and seminars that are offered in the third and fourth years. Students who meet the requirements specified by the Department, have the option of writing a thesis in the last year of their studies under the guidance of a thesis supervisor.
The Department emphasizes the significance of an interdisciplinary perspective in research that stresses the importance of engaging with other social sciences and related fields, in order to develop better interpretations of social and cultural phenomena. To that end, students have the option of selecting some of their elective courses from other departments at Panteion, in fields such as Sociology, Criminology, Psychology, Social Policy, History, Political Science, Communication, Urban and Regional Development.
