The Anthropological Research Laboratory was founded with the aim of creating an institution which contributes to the investigation and development of theoretical and methodological interdisciplinary exchanges in order to explore the new, emerging tendencies of doing, writing and perceiving anthropology today.
More specifically, the workshop aims to:
• provide a platform for the exploration and cultivation of anthropological theory and practice.
• support the research activities of the department
• enhance the department’s international network
• allow for the acquisition of funds, in order to conduct original research, organize conferences and sponsor publications
• enable an effective interconnection between research and teaching.
• assist postgraduate and PhD students in their research activities
Administration Committee:
Professor Athena Athanasiou (director)
Professor Giorgos Tsimouris
Assistant Professor Eirini Avramopoulou
Since 2003, the Department of Social Anthropology has instituted what have come to be known as the “Wednesday Seminars”. These are public seminars, carried out every week of the academic year, for the purpose of facilitating communication and exchanges between the Department, the rest of the academic community, and Greek society. Each semester, departmental faculty have the responsibility of organizing these seminars around a common theme, selecting topics of social and academic interest and focusing on new and emergent ways of doing research in anthropology and other social sciences.
Invited speakers from academia and research centers from Greece and abroad, present their completed or ongoing research to an audience comprised of faculty, students and the interested public. The “Wednesday Seminars” have become a tradition and a point of reference, promoting a true sense of community and academic exchange within the Department, while facilitating ties with the wider community.
The Department of Social Anthropology accepts candidates for post-doctoral research that falls within the research areas of faculty members’ interests and fields of specialization, and is considered to have the potential to make an original contribution. The Departmental Assembly decides if an application meets the specified requirements for post-doctoral research. Once an application is approved, a faculty member with a compatible field of specialization is appointed as post-doctoral advisor.
University financial support for post-doctoral research is not available, although post-doctoral researchers may participate in funded research programs.

The Department of Social Anthropology is actively involved in international research and academic networks. Faculty members of the Department hold longstanding affiliations with academic institutions, worldwide, and are involved in international research projects funded by the European Commission, the Mellon Foundation and other funding bodies. The Department’s research and academic network was further expanded by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the School of Social Development and Public Policy, Fudan University, China.
Former students and research affiliates have built on the Department’s research network and have conducted fieldwork in countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Turkey, Russia, USA, Japan, Iran, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Syria and Palestine. Their research has been supported by scholarships from Greece, as well as important international funding organizations.
In this context, numerous conferences, workshops, seminars and public lectures are organized by the Department, on a regular basis, in which well-known social anthropologists, doing cutting-edge research, present their work.
The research and academic activities of the Department are further enhanced and supported by the recently established Anthropological Research Laboratory. The aim of the Laboratory is to promote the development of theoretical and methodological interdisciplinary exchanges, in order to explore the new and emerging tendencies of doing, writing and perceiving anthropology today.
