The Quality Assurance Policy of the Social Anthropology Department is designed dynamically and in combination with strategic goals and central objectives which are in line and consisted with the corresponding practices of Panteion University as a whole. Our constant and active interest concerning the provision of a rounded and high quality education to students; the furthering of anthropological research and knowledge; and the cultivation of the understanding of society and culture based on the use of comparative, interdisciplinary methodology and a critical yet open approach towards reality and vicissitudes, inform our vision and developmental strategy in the Department, and at the same time safeguard the terms of evaluation of the work and services we provide at all levels.

In particular, the Quality Assurance Policy of the Social Anthropology Department is served through the continuous pursuit of the following complementary objectives:

• The formulation and systematic monitoring in practice of a substantial, modern and competitive Undergraduate Studies Programme (USP). Focusing on the variegated field of the expanding anthropological knowledge, over a four-year period the USP provides students with a solid academic basis in the discipline, while offering a comprehensive knowledge of the wider field of social sciences. Additionally, by taking into consideration the needs and diversity of the student body, the USP ensures the smooth transition of students through the various stages and levels of the educational process, strengthening their autonomy and serving their academic preferences.

• The regular renewal, improvement and development of the USP, based on modern, innovative pedagogical methods of teaching on the basis of input received through the annual institutionalised quality assurance and monitoring procedures (Internal Evaluation Team, Programme Committee), the evaluation of the USP in practice, the student evaluations, the on-going dialogue between students and instructors that is based on years-long teaching experience, and the significant contributions of prime research and literature.

• Ensuring the quality of the educational services offered, on the one hand through the use of new technologies, alternative and attractive teaching methods and techniques that favour the students’ active participation, and on the other hand through transparent, meritocratic procedures for the selection and development of instructors who are distinguished, in Greece and abroad, for their research and their scientific publications.

• The systematic care for the formulation and development of a solid orientation that serves and enhances both academic knowledge and professional capabilities much needed in the public sphere and job market, so that students of the Department can be employed upon graduation in a wide range of public and private sector institutions on the basis of their anthropological expertise, cultural sensitivity and scientific approach. Among such areas we may single out education, state administration, health structures, heritage and cultural industry, as well as tourism. In this direction, the Department’s Internship Programme (which is constantly developing and integrating new institutions and professional outlets) allows students to make ample use of their theoretical and methodological knowledge, and to gain much needed work experience while still in the university.

• Ensuring the link between research and teaching through the integration and implementation of multiple options for our students which include preparation of theses and dissertations, participation in research projects and summer schools, internships, small-scale fieldwork, mobility programmes within Europe and further away, seminars and workshops, courses in English, training lectures, activities of the Anthropological Research Laboratory, and involvement in the organisation of conferences, ethnographic film festivals and other events.

• The development of an extroverted academic character for the USP, which is favoured by continual contacts and mutual exchanges of students and teaching staff within and outside Greece by making use of interdepartmental collaborations, collaborations between institutions and research centres, mobility programmes, international meetings, as well as networking and international connections.

The effective implementation of the Quality Assurance Policy of the Social Anthropology Department, as reflected in the USP, requires the close and fruitful cooperation of the teaching/research and administrative staff both at the level of the Department and at that of the University as a whole towards the fulfilment of the same major objective: Offering students a solid, functional and open to new stimuli and scientific challenges undergraduate curriculum. A programme that through assessment, evaluation, comparison and improvement seeks to consistently meet the academic/scientific requirements and prospects of a modern department of pure anthropological studies, comparable in scope and quality –as demonstrated by the 2013 External Evaluation– to similar departments in universities abroad.
